Seasonal allergies can wreak havoc at any given moment, depending on where you live. In the southeastern part of the US, allergies seem to be part of my everyday life (I’m looking at you, pollen). Because of this, I’m sharing the 7 essential oils that I suggest for support when your allergies just won’t let you be great.
1. Tea Tree
Tea Tree oil is one of those oils that every household should have on hand because it's so effective and has such a wide range of uses. It has a fresh, invigorating scent that can be diffused to mask unpleasant odors, but Tea Tree is best known for its purifying qualities, making it useful for cleansing the skin, home surfaces, and purifying the air. It has proven anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties, and is believed to neutralize airborne pathogens that cause and trigger allergies. Diffusing Tea Tree helps kill mold, bacteria and fungi, while also acting as a natural deodorizer to help freshen the air, disinfect the home and eliminate allergens.
In addition to its grounding properties, Frankincense is a great oil for respiratory issues and seasonal allergies. Research suggests that using a blend of oils, including Eucalyptus, for infections of the upper respiratory tract leads to a significant and immediate improvement in symptoms.
Probably most well known for its ability to reduce stress and promote restful slumber, Lavender oil is the number one choice for many when they need calming, grounding and rest. It has been called “a medicine chest in a bottle” due to its wide range of effects. Lavender oil is also effective at helping to relieve headaches, PMS, cramps, muscle aches and pains - and can help relieve sinus and nasal stuffiness - as well as chest congestion.
Peppermint oil is is an energizing oil with a strong, fresh, minty aroma that will help sinus congestion almost immediately. It has anti-inflammatory, pain relieving and decongestant relieving abilities, working wonders for headaches caused by sinus pressure. Combining Peppermint with Lavender and Lemon oils creates an effective and soothing allergy relief combination as well.
Eucalyptus is well known for its use as a respiratory oil. A fresh and stimulating oil, it has a penetrating scent and strong antiseptic properties. It is widely used to relieve congestion and muscle aches. Eucalyptus can be used in baths or blended with a carrier oil to use in a chest rub for colds. Use in a steam inhalation for nasal and/or sinus congestion. As a preventative, use Eucalyptus oil in a diffuser during the night to help protect yourself when others are sick with colds or flu, or to relieve already triggered allergies.
Lemon essential oil is a must for every household. It is one of the most important oils for supporting the immune system due to its antimicrobial properties. Lemon essential oil is probably best known as a powerful anti-bacterial and disinfectant to use around the home - especially useful if you are allergic to dust mites and pet dander. Lemon oil can kill bacteria and eliminate any allergy triggers on surfaces and in the air. Diffuse lemon into the air to help with the symptoms of colds, coughs and other respiratory problems.
Our Anti-Bac oil is a synergistic bacteria-fighting specialty blend of healing oils designed to give your immune system a gentle boost. Use as a disinfectant or preventative in a diffuser, add a few drops to a warm bath or in the shower, or add to a Personal Zen DIffuser for allergy relief.
Bonus: Breathe Easy
Our Breathe Easy blend is great for relieving congestion and clearing sinuses when allergies, cold and flu seasons strike. Works great blended into a carrier, or just putting a few drops in a difuser to freshen the air and facilitate clean breathing.
These are just a few of my favorite oils that I turn to to keep my allergies at bay. Let me know in the comments your go-to oil for sinus and allergy relief.
