As the seasons shift from summer to fall and we prepare for less sunlight and what feels like shorter days, it’s important to step up your self-care. Self-care doesn’t have to be expensive or indulgent, and often the best self-care practices are ones that don’t take a lot of time but have a big impact on your overall well-being. Here are 5 quick and easy self-care ideas that are perfect for the fall.
1. Read a book or take time to journal
If you’re a reader, fall is the perfect time to cozy up with a good book and let it take you on a new adventure. Whether you like fiction, want to learn a new craft or skill, or are a self-help junkie, reading is a great way to unplug and use your idle time.
If you’re not much of a reader, consider using the time to write in your journal. Write down your goals, aspirations, affirmations, what’s stressing you, what makes you happy, what you’re grateful for - the possibilities are endless! Whether you choose to read or journal, it’s a great way to start or end your day.
2. Diffuse essential oils
Have you ever noticed how a certain smell can bring back vivid memories or even lift your spirits? Maybe it's a scent that your significant other wears, or even the smell of your grandmother's home (and no, I don't mean the smell of ointment, lol).
Essential oils have the ability to lift your mood, which can have a positive impact on your mental health and well-being. Scents such as orange, lemon, lemongrass and grapefruit are uplifting and have a mood-enhancing effect that is perfect for times when you are feeling down. In the fall, I love to diffuse blends with earthy scents, such as cedarwood, patchouli and frankincense.
3. Go for a walk or a hike
Nature is so beautiful at this time of year. Walking and spending time in nature can improve your mood, reduce stress and positively impact your overall health and well-being. It’s also inexpensive and easy to do, so it’s a win-win if you ask me! While you’re out, why not take pictures of the colorful leaves and scenery? And if you’re feeling crafty, take a few leaves home to create a scrapbook.
4. Spend time baking or cooking
I’m not much of a baker myself, but I loveee baked goods. What better time to perfect your newest pumpkin spice cake, muffin or cookie recipe? If baking isn’t your thing, what about cooking? I don’t know about you but I look forward to making (and eating) chili and soups as the weather gets cooler. No matter what you choose, baking or cooking can be a great way to reduce stress.
5. Hangout with friends and family
Fall is also a great time to spend a little extra time with friends and family. Be it a big family dinner, a friends and family game night, movie night or just hanging out enjoying a good show - surrounding yourself with loved ones can have a significant impact on your overall well-being.
